Behind the scenes

How uploading works

You don't have to do anything but play and /reload now and then. Here's what happens in between, for the curious.

From your game to Ley Maps

  1. The addon takes notes in memory

While you play, Ley Maps keeps its notes inside the game.

  2. WoW writes them to disk

On /reload, logout or exit, WoW saves them to WTF\Account\<your account>\SavedVariables\LeyMaps.lua. Forever doesn't load that file back, so each save replaces the last: keep the tray running so nothing is missed.

  3. The tray reads the file as data

The tray waits until the file has stopped changing, reads it as plain data (it is never run as code), and keeps only what's new or changed since the last upload.

  4. It uploads, or queues

New notes go up in small batches. Offline? They wait in a queue on your PC and go up on their own once you're back, retrying from every few seconds to every 5 minutes. Uploading the same thing twice changes nothing.

Checking on it

In the tray

The Uploads card shows when your last upload went up and how much is queued. Upload now sends right away; Pause uploads stops it until you resume.

On the website

Your account lists your characters, your recent uploads and which PC sent each one.

The tray icon

Hover it: up to date, uploading…, waiting for the server (queued, it will retry) or needs attention (open the tray window to see what).

When an upload is refused

If the server can't accept something (for example a damaged file), the tray keeps it aside and doesn't send it again until it changes, and the error report says which kind of record it was, never the record itself. Everything else keeps uploading.
