Getting started
Install the tray app
Five minutes, once. After that the tray keeps itself and the addon up to date, and uploads in the background while you play.
-
Download and run the installer
Run
Ley-Maps-Setup.exe. It installs for your Windows user only (no admin rights needed) and starts the tray. You'll find it by the clock as a small Ley Maps icon.Windows may say "Windows protected your PC". The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't know it. Choose More info → Run anyway. Only do this for the file you downloaded from this site.
-
Sign in with Battle.net
Click Sign in with Battle.net. Your browser opens; log in with Battle.net if asked. The page shows a short code like
K7P-3QX: check the tray shows the same code, then click Connect and let the browser open Ley Maps.Only connect a PC you just clicked Sign in on yourself. Nobody from Ley Maps will ever ask you to connect for them.
-
Choose your World of Warcraft folder
Click Choose… and pick the folder WoW is installed in (for example
C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft). If it holds more than one game version, the tray asks which one is Forever. -
Save and start
The tray installs the Ley Maps addon into that game's
Interface\AddOnsfolder and starts watching for new data. Then turn the addon on in WoW.
Linux and Steam Deck
World of Warcraft runs on Linux under Wine or Proton (Lutris, Steam, Bottles, Heroic). The tray runs natively next to it.
-
AppImage (any distribution, Steam Deck desktop mode):
download
Ley-Maps.AppImage, make it executable (chmod +x Ley-Maps.AppImage, or Properties → Allow executing) and run it. It updates itself. -
Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS:
download the
.deband install it withsudo apt install ./ley-maps_amd64.deb.
When you choose your World of Warcraft folder, the tray lists the installs it found inside your
Wine and Proton prefixes; pick one. If yours isn't listed, choose the
World of Warcraft folder inside the prefix's drive_c yourself.
Steam Deck: set the tray up in desktop mode. It runs only while desktop mode does, so play in Game Mode as usual and switch to desktop mode now and then: the game keeps what the addon recorded, and the tray uploads it then.
What the tray does on its own
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Uploads new addon data | A couple of seconds after WoW saves (on /reload, logout or exit) |
| Checks for a new addon version and installs it | Every 30 minutes (Settings can turn this off) |
| Picks up in-game guides sent to your characters | Every 5 minutes |
| Updates itself | At start, then every 6 hours; you choose when to restart |
| Sends error reports (no game data) | Only problems, every 5 minutes (Settings can turn this off) |
Something not right?
- The browser didn't open the app after Connect: make sure the tray is running, then click Sign in in the tray again. Each sign-in link works once, for 5 minutes, and only for the app that started it.
- The tray icon says "waiting for the server" (hover it): uploads are queued because you're offline or the server is busy. Nothing is lost; it retries on its own.
- The tray icon says "needs attention": open the tray window; the top line says what's wrong. Open logs folder in Settings has the details.
